Instructions & Forms

Onboarding

New staff and students in CAIR should start with the checklist and introductory material in the CAIR Onboarding guide. This guide introduces policies specific to CAIR equipment and utilizing research designated spaces in the Alberta Children’s Hospital.

Handbook

The CAIR program created a handbook to provide all necessary information regarding starting and running a study at the Alberta Children's Hospital. For additional information, please contact the CAIR Research Manager. The handbook is updated periodically with policy updates.

IT

Information about how to solve computer software and hardware problems can be found in the CAIR IT Handbook. All new staff and students should familiarize themselves with the CAIR IT guidelines.

Accessing the Pediatric 3T Scanner for a New Study

Scan time

Application

All requests for access to the 3T Scanner must be first be examined by our Operations committee. The Committee meets the first Wednesday of each month. Applications must be submitted at least 5 working days prior to be reviewed at the next meeting.

Complete our online application for research scan time on the ACH 3T at the SFMRC website. The online form can only be accessed remotely after connecting to the University of Calgary VPN. From ACH, access does not require VPN.

Please refer to the  CAIR Handbook for guidance on study planning, e.g. scan session duration and consent form language.

The scan time application can be made in parallel with the ethics application. After scan time and ethics approval, a copy of the ethics approval letter should be sent to the DI Director, Ken Dunstall.

Pilot Time

A very limited amount of funding is available to conduct pilot scans for grant submission; please indicate if you wish to apply for this on the Application for 3T Research Time.

This time is used for the purposes of establishing new studies when a PI does not have access to other sources of funding.

Pilot time, if/when approved, should be booked through the online booking calendar, Calpendo. In the case of human volunteers, proper ethics approval must be in place prior to scanning.

High Field Development Program Consent Forms

Testing a new MRI protocol (e.g. revising sequences) by scanning a volunteer subject that is not part of a study is permitted as part of the High Field Development program. Consent forms are mandatory even when the volunteer is familiar with the 3T (ex: a level 1 trained lab trainee).

The consent forms for the subjects are available by clicking the appropriate link below:

Adult Consent Form | Child Assent Form | Parent Consent Form

The Research Manager is available for assisting with MRI protocol development. Please contact Dr. Perry Radau for assistance.

Additional resources

The CAIR program is pleased to present a family-oriented website mri4kids explaining what to expect from a research MRI scan at the ACH.
